Well the Christmas lights were all shining at the mall
And I found a place in the crowded parking lot
When a man came up to me and said “Mister can ya help me please?”
And I said, “Sure, let me just see what I’ve got”
So I handed him a dollar and I said “Merry Christmas.”
And I turned to go ‘cause I had so much to do
But he caught me by the sleeve and said “Mister, before you leave,
I have a Christmas gift that I’d like to give you too.
And he said …
May you be filled with loving-kindness.
May you be well, may you be happy
May you be peaceful and at ease.
May you be free, may you be free
In the mall so many weary people rushing around
Trying to buy the perfect Christmas with what little cash they’re paid.
And the thought occurred to me “I think I know just what they need.”
So I closed my eyes and I smiled and I prayed…
Sometimes the world seems so dark
And sadness is all you can see
And we’re helpless and mired in despair
But there’s still a light that’s shining inside both you and me
And there’s still a chance for peace if we still care
So I guess this is my Christmas gift to you
It’s not much, but it meant the world to me
You can return it if you want but I prefer you pass it on
And this world may be a better place to be
